Christian (2024)

Director: Pan Chuqiao
Duration: 11 min
Language: Mandarin
Subtitles: Chinese, English
Country/Region: United Kingdom
Through the perspective of a young Asian man living in London, Christian explores the complex intersections of sexuality, faith, race, and migration.
Religion has long been framed as an opposing force within queer narratives. Rather than reproducing this binary, however, the film presents a nuanced portrait of an individual continually negotiating, struggling with, and seeking balance between seemingly conflicting aspects of his identity. It is less concerned with determining whether faith or queerness should prevail than with understanding how both can coexist within a single life.
Set against the backdrop of diasporic existence, the film extends its inquiry to questions of cultural belonging and spiritual identity. With restraint and sincerity, it documents an ongoing process of self-exploration. Christian reminds us that queer experience is not always defined by escape or resistance; it is equally about finding ways to live with uncertainty, contradiction, and the complexities of the self.

& Director Statement
Homosexuality is unacceptable behaviour in Christianity. Even if the two people love each other sincerely, the Bible considers this behaviour to be unnatural and destroying God’s order. In Christianity, love is the origin of all in the universe and the core of human life. As a central reality, it has the most creative power, and God created the world because of love. However, we generally believe that love is a basic human emotion, which is the pleasure and appreciation of all the beautiful things in the world. And sexual minorities should still have the right to love and be loved by others. As a kind of natural behaviour of human beings, whether love should be related to religion, gender, and skin tone is the topic that this production would like to discuss in this film. In soteriology, a Christian obtains salvation through God’s love and love for other people, which is the original inspiration of creating “Christian”. The protagonist of the story, Yang, comes from China, which is far away from Western religious culture. He falls in love secretly with a straight white Christian who lives in London. By exploring himself and the religion from the person whom he loves, he completes his redemption accidentally.
